“I must have flowers, always, and always.” Claude Monet.
Bloss story
Bloss Flower Farm is situated just out of Bothwell in the Central Highlands of Tasmania. It is located on a hill at ‘Dungrove’, a 7th generation sheep and cattle grazing property.
Jess, owner of Bloss Flower Farm, has been flower farming for over 7 years on the property. It all started in a small fenced off area in a paddock next to the house and has now moved to a much larger area about 100m from our house on a beautiful bank overlooking the farm.
The biggest challenge for Jess has been the weather in the Highlands. Growing seasonal flowers in a very cool climate has restricted her season greatly. However, it has also enabled her to grow some niche crops that love a chilling period over winter for example, double tulips, peonies and bearded iris’.
Jess starts her seeds at the beginning of October in a hot-house and tries to have them transplanted out by the start of December as unpredictable weather such as late frosts, snow, strong winds and hail is common all the way into December.
Jess’ farm is at an elevation of 550m and is an extremely cool climate for growing dahlias. This restricts her growing season and means that every year she needs to dig up the dahlias so they don’t freeze in the ground over winter. She stores her tubers in a shipping container in sawdust over winter, divides them and then sells the tubers come Spring time.
